Winter in San Antonio is way better than winter in Kansas
That was 20 years ago, and I’ve never regretted the decision to move. The city is beautiful, the people are great, and it was definitely a great decision.
The only problem was nobody told me about the heat. That first summer had me thinking I was on another planet. At the time, I was still working in construction, and the heat made me rethink everything.
That summer heat actually did me a big favor.
I quit my job, enrolled in trade school, and took a big pay cut working as an apprentice for an HVAC company.
The heat and the smaller paychecks motivated me to learn everything I could and start saving to go out on my own one day.
After 5 years of working long hours and pinching pennies, I was finally ready to open for business, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
The heat motivated me, but seeing how other companies treated their customers lit a fire that still burns. High-pressure sales and outright lies were so commonplace in the HVAC business that it made my head spin.
I can’t tell you how many times I almost got fired because I wouldn’t pressure people to buy stuff they didn’t need. It was all about money, and nobody seemed to care about the customer.
